Cover Composite Breakdown in Pixelmator

Technical article demonstrating the process of building cover image using Pixelmator—Macintosh based graphics software.




Step 1

Telescopic photograph of ring-shaped galaxy placed over layer filled with solid true black color.

The image layer has a mask with a transparent to black radial gradient applied to darken outer edges.

Step 2

Vector graphic of clock icon chosen from Custom Shapes menu. Placed above initial background layer.

Layer Style

Fill Color: Radial Gradient – First color stop: 0 per cent – Fill: #ff884a – Second color stop: 100 per cent – Fill: #610703.

Ramp softness: 50 per cent.

Stroke: Color: #000000 – Width: 3 px – Style: Outside – Opacity: 100 per cent.

Inner shadow: Color: #ffc961 – Angle: 171° – Offset: 12 px – Blur: 18 px – Opacity: 100 per cent.

Reflection: Opacity: 43 per cent.

Layer blend mode set to Lighten to interact with image layer. Opacity of clock layer set to 83 per cent.

Step 3

Layer placed above clock. Clouds chosen from Color Adjustments in the File Menu. From Effects Browser, Generator, the Clouds option is set with the default options of White to Black. Layer Blend mode set to Overlay at 100 per cent Opacity to introduce subtle interactions with colors of underlying layers.

Step 4

Two layers added and filled with yellow. Noise chosen from the Effects Browser, Stylize.

Motion Blur chosen from Effects Browser, Blur. Strength adjusted to create scan line effect.

Layer Blend modes set to Linear Dodge with 100 per cent Opacity to brighten and partially reveal underlying layers.

Step 5

Two rectangular vector shapes drawn above yellow band layers. Blend modes set to Hard Light at 100 per cent Opacity.

Step 6

Name of story and author name placed above yellow bands. Font face Athelas bold.

Layer Style set to Fill Color: #913900 – Inner Shadow: Color: #000000 – Angle: 90° – Offset: 2 px – Blur: 2px – Opacity 100 per cent.
